The Importance Of Lighting In Interior Design

admin » 30 August 2009 » In Interior Design » No Comments

How you light your house is an important part of redecorating. A change in the lighting can change how the room is viewed. Lighting interior design contributes greatly to the look and feel of a room. There are many types of lighting which can be used in various rooms. We are no longer restricted to a few lamps around the room.

Ambient lighting is a hidden light source that washes the room with a glow. This creates very few shadows and tends to flatten a room. Japanese paper lanterns and wall sconces both produce ambient lighting. For temporary ambient effects, use a dimmer with your ordinary lighting.

Accent lighting provides interest to a room. This method of lighting interior design highlights and object or architectural feature. To use accent lighting, you only need a bulb and a shield to direct the light to the desired focus. Halogen spotlights and opaquely shaded table lamps both provide accent lighting.

Another kind of lighting used in interior design is task lighting. This is a more practical lighting strategy, highlighting an area for daily activities such as reading, cooking, and sewing. Effective task lighting prevents eyes strain and helps with the performance of vital activities. The kitchen is a particularly good place to incorporate task lighting in your interior design. Task lighting sources should be unobtrusive and shielded to prevent glare. Task lighting can be effectively combined with accent lighting to produce lovely effects.

Some lighting can be a work of art in and of itself. Aesthetic lighting is purely decorative, such as a neon sculpture or a spotlight illuminating a statue or painting. This type of lighting must not be used alone, but accompanied by other lighting strategies in your interior design.

Of course, no survey of lighting interior design would be complete without a mention of natural light. Rooms can be arranged to take advantage of the position of the sun at different times of day. This type of lighting is also called kinetic lighting because the light from outside moves. It is one of the less reliable types, as it is affected by the seasons and the weather, but natural lighting can produce an effect unequaled by any artificial light source when used properly.

Lighting is an important tool in your design collection. The way you do your lighting interior design affects the perception of any room. Lighting is also versatile. Using several strategies at once in a room allows you to turn any of them off, changing the look and feel with the flick of a switch. This can be effective for creating different moods in different rooms at night.

Best Home Security System: What you Need to Consider

admin » 29 August 2009 » In Home Security » No Comments

Depending on what you want to protect at home or what it is you would like to monitor, you have to choose the best home security system to avoid spending too much on something that you won’t be using over time. Choosing the best home security system really depends on your lifestyle. Do you spend a lot of time at home? Or are you usually away on business trips? Simple facts like these can determine what the best home security system is for you.

For the Homebody

For the people who spend a lot of their time at home and don’t travel much, there are a few options to consider for the best home security system. This includes an alarm, which can either be silent or not. The silent option is more suitable to get the police to your home before the burglar realizes an alarm was triggered. Another item to include in the best home security system is an electronic door lock that allows only those who know the combination to activate or deactivate the alarm. This is especially helpful when installed in entrances. Those who do not know the combination will more than likely be intruders. If there are wireless cameras installed in this type of best home security system, there is the option of installing monitors as well. These monitors can be set up in a den or bedroom and will show live feeds of what the cameras are “looking at”. For the homebody this is perfect for round the clock observation of the house and family.

For the Traveler

There are also some best home security options for people who travel a lot throughout the year. Of course, their houses must be protected or there must be some kind of security system to help in the capture of any intruders in the house. Motion detection devices hooked up to silent alarms are very essential in this type of situation. This best home security system will set off an alarm that can be used to alert the police (with the right technical adjustment and permissions from authorities) but it will not let the robber know that it has been triggered. You can also set it up so you can let a trusted neighbor or friend know that something is going on in the house. This will alert your friend that there is someone other than you inside the house and he or she can call the police. Nothing is more essential than to have a camera recording all the events in your house. Since wireless camera power sources are not reliable, you might want to consider cabled cameras that can get their power off of the local electricity in the house. This is the best home security system and you can have the camera record all the activities in the house while you are away. It is best to hook it up to a computer system that has a large storage capacity. The other option is to have the camera record activities at certain times of the day or night.

Know what kind of person you are and how much time you spend at home. This will help you to determine the best home security system that can protect you, your loved ones and the valuable items that you have in your house.

Bathroom Interior Design Tips For Beautiful And Practical Bathrooms

admin » 29 August 2009 » In Interior Design » No Comments

The bathroom is one of the most neglected rooms in the house when it comes to looking its best. This room is often thought of as needing to be practical, rather than pretty. Fortunately, bathroom interior design can be simply and easily improved upon without sacrificing utility. Attractive custom storage can help to reduce clutter in your bathroom, keeping your important toiletries and cleaning supplies neatly out of sight.

Hotel inspired bathrooms can give the feeling of get-away luxury without ever leaving home. Good lighting, clean lines, and marble surfaces make the bathroom attractive and uncluttered. A large mirror can expand the appearance of space. Other bathroom interior design ideas for a hotel-styled bathroom include monogrammed towels, attractive wallpaper, and crisp design elements.

When the bathroom is used and who will be using it will inform your bathroom interior design choices. A public powder room will be able to be more whimsical or dramatic, whereas a family bath must be more practical. Guest baths should create a welcoming and inviting space for people away from home. A master bathroom should encourage relaxation.

Be careful to choose materials that will not be damaged by water and humidity for your bathroom interior design. Wallpaper can be used in some bathrooms, but in other, the high humidity can cause it to peel and fall off. Tile is a popular choice for a bathroom, but can be damaged if your bathroom is high traffic. A good substitute for traditional tiles is vinyl tile, which can look just like ceramic or marble, but is not as easily broken. Wood cabinets are popular as well, but again, you should be careful to make sure they will not be susceptible to water damage. Wood can swell, warp, and crack in humid environments.

The right shower or tub is important in bathroom interior design. You should choose one that fits your needs, is easily cleaned, and will not be damaged easily if your bathroom sees a lot of use. Acrylic is a good choice for these situations. Traditional fiberglass is light weight, but can be easily scratched. Cast iron and cultured marble provide timeless looks, but are heavy and can be expensive. They may also require extra support under the bathroom floor. Also, try to be sure that your tub or shower is proportioned for the people who are using it. Very tall people may be frustrated by a low shower head. It is important to adjust your bathroom interior design ideas for the people who will be using the room.

A Home Security System Is a Good Start, but Keep Going

admin » 29 August 2009 » In Home Security » No Comments

Redundancy may be an evil word in the business world, where every manager is trying to streamline, trim the fat, downsize, and eliminate overhead.  When it comes to your home security system, redundancy is the law.

Start with Layer 1 and build your home security system from there.  A good foundation gives all the other parts something to rest on, so make it a good foundation by calling the professionals.

Layer 1:  Install a Home Security System

A professionally-installed alarm system is the perfect foundation for protecting your property.  Talk to your security company’s customer service representatives to find out what options are available and which ones will help you meet your goals of keeping your home and family safe.

Door and window alarms, keyless touch pads, panic buttons, and fire, flood, and carbon monoxide alarms are all available.  If you live in a multi-story home, protect all levels with the same alarm system in a seamless net.

Layer 2:  Strong Protection Starts at Home

A home security alarm system does little good if you do not have proper doors and windows.  Weak hinges, weak locks, and weak windows make it easy for a criminal to break in to your home.  Pay a professional for a consultation and replace anything that needs replacing.  Even something as simple as trimming the bushes may help prevent a burglary.

Layer 3:  Look Around for Areas of Weakness in the System

Spend some time considering where a burglar would break in if given a chance.  Imagine how long it would take you to get to the phone to call emergency services, if you should ever need emergency services.  It is always better to have someone else call the police and fire department so you can deal with the situation at hand.  Knowing help is on the way calms your nerves in an emergency.

Layer 4:  Remember to Use All These Systems Consistently

Turn on the home security alarm system even when you are at home.  Lock the doors and windows.  Keep the garage closed when you are not using it.  Lock your car, even inside the garage.  Keep expensive or valuable items tucked out of the sight of burglars and thieves.

Layer by layer, you must build redundancy into your home security.  Everything supports and reinforces everything else, giving you a true safety net you can count on for the most precious thing of all – peace of mind.

Even the multiple layers of redundancy at the home security company matter; make sure they have several call centers in case something goes wrong on their end, and ask them about their own response times and procedures so you know the security company has your safety as their primary concern.

Remember, the phrase “home security system” contains the word “system.”  All parts of your home security system should work together and support the biggest goal of all:  keeping your family, your belongings, and your property safe and secure.

Starting A Landscaping Business

admin » 28 August 2009 » In Landscaping » No Comments

According to the Bureau of Census Service Annual Survey , the lawn care and landscape business is a $46.8 billion industry in 2006. Each year, people spend that much on landscaping services. Over the last 10 years, the industry has grown considerably. The beauty of the landscaping industry is that virtually anyone can do it. No prior business knowledge is required. I know high school students that make $12,000 or more in the summer. I believe that anyone can make at least $20,000 landscaping. Great landscapers earn over $100,000 a year. What the industry offers is an easy to start business opportunity. Most aspects of the business are already taken care of and all you have to do is follow the steps that I outline in this business kit. It is an extremely simple operation to learn and apply. You can do it. Yes, you.

Landscaping is a solution to the dull 9-5 job. This business lets you be your own boss, work for yourself, and determine your own schedule. With over 7 years of industry experience, I have created a realistic business opportunity that has proved to be a success with anyone who takes the principles and applies them.

The downside of the lawn care and landscaping business is that it is highly seasonal. Your location can spell a huge difference in the potential success of your business. The demand in Florida is higher than the demand in Maine or Michigan or in other states that remain buried in snow for a longer period of time.

I have been in this business for over seven years. I saw it when it was small and have seen it grow exponentially! According to several sources, the landscaping industry has had an amazing 1000% increase in growth over the last 10 years! Also, residential homeowners as well as commercial and professional business owners spend over a billion dollars each season for this service and its associated products. And, with the landscaping industry being so versatile, this quite possibly will be the perfect ‘add-on’ service to your existing business. It is also the perfect business that can earn you enough in 8 months so you can either take the rest of the year off or run another seasonal business during the other 4 months of the year.

As a general rule, the landscaping season begins in Spring focusing mainly on commercial properties. This is when you will start to look for leads and begin your work. The season ends in mid to late fall when the grass has stopped growing at your clients’ homes and businesses.

Landscaping businesses can make more than $500 per day per work crew during the season. Well-organized installation crews can make more that $1000 per day. It is also not uncommon for landscapers to earn upwards of $1500 in a single day when doing work on larger residential and commercial jobs. I recently managed to get a landscaping contract with a local church. The quote I gave was for $1300. My equipment costs were minimal and I paid my 2 employees $120 each. Do the math. At the end of the job, I had over $1000 cash profit in my back pocket and a huge smile on my face!

A smaller landscaping business can easily expect to earn more than $20,000 in their first year as long as they have a solid business plan. Try to begin with the end in mind. I know of many mid size landscaping companies that make between 100 and 150 thousand dollars each year – between Spring and Autumn! There is a ton of money to be made in this industry. You are providing an essential service that people will use month after month and year after year.

The landscaping industry is the perfect add-on for seasonal businesses like, Christmas Light Installers, construction workers, window cleaners, junk removal services, painters, roofers, and framers. The main thing that attracted me to this industry is the fact that this business is extremely low risk. I have been able to use my current client database to create leads and get contracts. In the winter, I run a Christmas Light Installation business and have been able to keep my employees during this season whereas in past years, I had to lay them off and often they never came back because they found other work! This business changed that!

The landscaping industry is one of the fastest growing service industries in the United States, Canada, and the UK! Each year, the demand for this service increases. For some reason everyone wants to have a better looking lawn than their neighbors. In a recent study, it was shown that the thing that people despised most about owning a home is the pain of lawncare. People want a beautiful looking property without the hassle of mowing their own lawn. This is where you come in and cash out!

This wonderful business opportunity is now more popular than ever and you are a part of it! The biggest benefit you have is that you are starting now. It’s here and you got in on the ground floor at the beginning. That means there is a ton of room for growth. There is also room for small business owners, like you, to make a ton of money in a short period of time. It’s going to be some work, but once you get rolling, you are going to look back and think that taking the first step was the best decision you could have ever made.

One reason for the growing demand of this service is the growth of two income families. The increasing number of double-income families means the number of people with no time but has money on hand is increasing. In fact, according to a nationwide survey conducted by International Communications Research for the Bayer Lawn Care Institute, “the average homeowner spends nearly eight hours each week on lawn care and landscaping tasks around their home and would consider hiring a professional service in order to acquire more free time.”

The target market of the lawn care and landscaping businesses are homeowners with larger size lawns. Larger lawns, such as with 4,000 – 7,000 square feet, typically yield better margins when factors such as transportation time and costs are considered. The typical target market also include middle class suburban families with large lawns and no teenage children, as teenagers are likely to be tasked to mow and take care of the lawns. Middle-aged homemakers are also more likely to rely on a lawn service compared to younger homemakers who are more likely to do the lawn themselves.

Lawn care services can be residential or commercial. Residential lawn care services typically include lawn cutting, trimming, edging and removal of clippings. The service is typically offered once a week through the frequency can depend on the customer’s requests. This side of the business is made up of many small companies. This occurs because of high labor intensity, low startup costs, and nature of the industry.

The commercial side consists of apartment complexes, business parks, and common areas of subdivisions, schools and others. The commercial side is typically serviced by larger lawn care landscaping services.

In this industry, you are simply selling a service that includes the landscaping duties on homes and businesses. Can it get any easier than that?

The difference that you make in this business is how you choose to sell your services. Many landscaping companies differ in how they sell their service. Some companies only sell the landscaping service requiring customers to provide the tools and materials while others provide the work with no warranty. Other full-service companies offer to provide the landscaping, do the gardening, and give a warranty.

I have found that the service that works best is one that combines all these variables together. I have built my business model on this principle. It is a model that that provides the landscaping service to the customer, I supply all the tools and the lawnmowers, and I offer a warranty.

Material-Specific Home Office Furniture Care Tips

admin » 28 August 2009 » In Furniture » No Comments

The level of care you impart on your home office furniture may depend upon how much is needed. It also might depend upon from what materials each item is created.

Cleaning Tips by Type of Material

Veneer, Marble, or Treated Plywood This type of tabletop desk or shelf can most likely be wiped off with a mild soap and water. The easiest way to do this is to find a spray cleaner which you can apply and wipe off very easily.

This is true of most other cleaners that are available for use on any material. If you are in doubt of what material might be used for this purpose you might want to seek further advice.

Metal The procedure you use mostly depends upon the type of metal, but it ordinarily is cleaned with either a damp cloth and then instantly wiped dry. If you are wiping chrome, steel, bronze, or other metal it may be a good idea to find a specialised cleaner.

Usually you have no need to worry, though. Most furniture of this type (i.e. cabinets or shelves) contains some common metal such as steel or aluminum which is very easy to clean. As always, just make sure you wipe it dry immediately after wetting it down or it will become cloudy or streaked.

Wood Remember to clean your wood furniture as frequently as possible, with a damp cloth and water or recommended cleaner. If you notice any liquid spills, make sure the problem is taken care of right away.

Otherwise, the liquid could seep into the wood in time this liquid could cause it to rot. In the event you notice any flaws in your wood it may need to be sanded, repainted, and then possibly refinished.

If you want to use polish to make your wooden pieces shine, you can do so on a regular basis with very little consequences, as long as you know when to say when. Nonetheless, make sure you are consistent in using the same time of cleaner, such as always using an oil-based polish or a wax-based type.

This will avoid contradiction of solutions which can cause unpleasant smudging or stickiness. It will avoid any amount of mess at all, as a matter of fact.

Glass To begin with, wipe piece off with a damp cloth to eradicate any excess dirt and buildup if the piece has not been cleaned in awhile. For this task you can use a web sponge to the surface as well, and either plain water or some ammonia and water.

Vinegar and water may be safer however, and has the same affect as ammonia. In any case too much cleaning solution, particularly if you use the ammonia. The reason why is because it could cause the glass to streak.

This is only a start, but you have some idea of what care is needed before you purchase your home office furniture. It will also help you clean the items you already own.
